Today Hollywood magicians use green screens and computers
for special effects, and so Front Screen Projection has gone the way of the Adding Machine and the Model T. But for its time, especially in the 1960s, nothing worked better than Front Screen Projection for the realistic look that would be needed both for the ape-men scenes in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the faked Apollo landings.
To see how Front Screen Projection looks on the screen, let’s examine the ape-men scenes at the beginning of Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey. While viewing the stills from these scenes, or watching them in the film, one has to remember that the early scenes in 2001 with the actors in ape costumes were all done on a soundstage. None of what you are seeing in the ape-men scenes at the beginning of 2001 was actually shot outside. The scenes that surround the ape-men are actually slides of a desert being projected onto Scotchlite screens standing at the rear of the set.
In order to create these desert backgrounds Kubrick sent a
photographic team to Spain to shoot 8” X 10” Ektachrome slides. These slides were then projected via the Front Screen Projection system onto the Scotchlite screen. The actors in ape costumes stood in front of the screen acting out the script.
If you watch 2001 on DVD you can actually occasionally see
the seams of the screen behind the gyrating apes. Kubrick was doing Front Screen Projection in such a huge and grand fashion that the technicians were forced to sew together many screens of Scotchlite so that Kubrick could create the vastness needed for the ape scenes to be believable.

esoteric knowledge to the candidate (orbit and observation of the moon without physical contact), rebirth of the initiate (solution of problem and repairs), and the raising up (of the Phoenix, the new age of Aquarius) by the grip of the lions paw (reentry and recovery of Apollo 13). 13 is the number of death and rebirth, death and reincarnation, sacrifice, the Phoenix, the Christ (perfected soul
imprisoned in matter), and the transition from the old to the new.

Exploration of the moon stopped because it was impossible to
continue the hoax without being ultimately discovered. And of course they ran out of pre-filmed episodes. No man has ever ascended higher than 300 miles, if that high, above the Earth’s surface. No man has ever orbited, landed on, or walked upon
the moon in any publicly known space program. If man has ever truly been to the moon it has been done insecret and with a far different technology.
The tremendous radiation encountered in the Van Allen Belt, solar radiation, cosmic radiation, temperature control, and many other
problems connected with space travel prevent living organisms
leaving our atmosphere with our known level of technology. Any
intelligent high school student with a basic physics book can prove NASA faked the Apollo moon landings. If you doubt this please explain how the astronauts walked upon the moon’s surface enclosed in a space suit in full sunlight absorbing a minimum of 265 degrees of heat surrounded by a vacuum. NASA tells us the moon has no atmosphere and that the astronauts were surrounded by the vacuum of space.
Well, dear Icarusinbound – firstly, I am pleased to see that NASA seems to have solved the vexing problem of flapping / upright-standing female hair: apparently, a shorter / trendier Italian haircut style does the trick !
And no, as that crew member ducks down behind her, Samantha’s mother doesn’t say “there’s a man at your back” – she just says “we are always close to you even from down here”. Now, as you can see earlier in the clip (at around 2:22) the man ducks down through that door held open by his fellow asstruenot:
The thing is, the next time he does so (at around 7:57) – that door would appear to be closed… As it is, we can see the closed door at 6:45 – and we can see it again (still closed) at 8:17. Terry Virts seems far too busy playing around with his spoon (thus, he isn’t likely to be the ‘doorman’) so we would have to assume that the ducking crew member opened and shut the door behind him all by himself !
